La rétrospective tant attendue d'une photographe américaine - du Sud! - majeure. Textes éclairants, impression irréprochable. Seul bémol: pas assez d'images inédites
I'm going to have to stop buying books sight unseen. Mann's early work is nearly unparalleled and I had hoped for a true monograph of photography. Instead this book is very heavily weighted with text, much of it sentimental and uninteresting. There's a reason we like pictures more than predictable commentary. Photographically her early to mid career pictures are what made Sally Mann seem like no other artist. The later works which make up maybe 2/3rds of this book are conceptual and not as visually interesting. If I had seen this in a bookstore first I would have passed on it, however if you are academically inclined this is for you. The context of the Historical South is of course all important.
Gorgeous, fabulous book of Mann's haunting photos. I grew up in the South, and it's hard to accurately describe the eerie yet beautiful quality of the people and the landscape, but somehow Mann captures the essence of this part of America with unique precision. Highly recommend
"A Thousand Crossings" is billed as the catalog accompanying a wonderful exhibition of Sally's work that opened at the National Gallery of Art and is currently on a multi-city tour, including on stop in Europe. From my point of view, this book is a de facto retrospective covering a wide range, perhaps not 100%, of Sally Mann's career.Sally Mann photographs that which has deep meaning to her and her images and prints convey those emotions more distinctly and strongly than just about any other living photographer. She has photographed her family, the landscape around her home in rural Virginia, the South and the legacy of the Civil War, the legacy of America's terrible years of slavery, the transience of our bodies. Working with large format cameras and wet, glass-plate negatives, her prints truly convey a feeling that would be totally missed if she worked with modern digital media and printing.I think "A Thousand Crossings" is a book that should be in the library of any serious photographer. My prior reading of her autobiographical "Hold Still" added to the insights I've garnered from "A Thousand Crossings." The quality of the printing is excellent. On the "worth what paid for" scale, the book is 10/10.My only nit with the book is with the essays written by various museum curators of photography. I frankly found their prose and language a bit over the top, and somewhat dense to plow through. However, none of this should subtract from your enjoyment and learning from a study of this fine book.
Sally Mann’s ‘A Thousand Crossings’ show was one of the best things I saw at a museum this year... shoot, maybe the last few years. The show monograph includes the texts and images extremely well printed. The introductory essay by Drew Gilpin Faust is a great addition and it really helps make the ideas inherent in the show complete. Great book, great show. Thanks to all who made it happen.
